It’s obvious that Americans know a great wine when they taste it! Though I have to say I can take or leave Merlot myself!
Can’t say I’m a great fan of booze in any form (not something you admit to out loud in the beer drinking capital of the world the Czech republic where booze is extremely cheap too) however I have an allergy to snow, it’s called a “cold” I believe and at night I have been experimenting with various ingredients for a Hot Toddy.
The best booze ingredient by far is Mount Gay Eclipse Barbadian Rum with the usually incidental ingredients, it knocks you out completely and you sleep for 10 hours without a problem and no side effects.
I would also recommend Tullamore D.E.W. which being an Irish Whiskey is a little disappointing on its own, but add it to hot lemon and sugar (I think honey spoils the taste) and wow what a nice flavour! It will only enable you to sleep for a few hours on one glass, but maybe that’s because you want to get up in the middle of the night, and then again at dawn, for a refill!
Lastly recently I added that ‘interesting’ fire water Metaxa as a basis for a Hot Toddy I used a seven star one from a “Metaxa Amphora” which oddly enough looks like a glass bottle shaped like an Amphora, I can’t tell you how disappointed I was that it wasn’t actually an Amphora! Anyway as with the other Toddies above I used a regulation amount of booze, which I believe is based on tipping a moderate amount into a glass and then having someone jog your elbow and splash in so much more.
What can I say! I almost broke my Mount Gay sleeping record and was complete dead to the world for hours, I even felt better when I woke up, sadly I am sniffing and sneezing once again and after I finish this little blog I will be perusing the drinks cupboard to see what I can glug into a Toddy glass later.
I don’t think I’m brave enough to mix Metaxa and Mount Gay together in a Toddy Glass and doubt that there would be much room for the other ingredients, but if I do, and survive, I’ll tell you all about it later! Hick!
I though I would give all the folks who don’t know how to make a Hot Toddy my recipe. It is very simple. Take a glass, add a sachet of Lemon Cold Powder Beechams make a nice one called ‘Lemsip,’ then add two teaspoons of sugar, a bit of real unwaxed Lemon if you have it to hand or at 11.00 at night can be bothered to take it out of the fridge, cut it, put the rest back and drop it into your glass. Then add the booze of your choice using the method above, and if you don’t have a pal to nudge you or they nudge you and not enough splurges out add more booze (you want to sleep don’t you?). Then, and this is important put a metal teaspoon into the glass and rest it on the side, this for some reason beyond me stops the glass shattering when you add boiling water. Add boiling water. Paws crossed the glass doesn’t shatter!
For those of you who want a proper recipe here is one from Epicurious.com.
Yield Makes 1 drink
Active Time 5 min
Total Time 10 min
1 oz (2 tablespoons) bourbon
1 tablespoon mild honey
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup boiling-hot water
Put bourbon, honey, and lemon juice in a 6-ounce mug. Top off with hot water and stir until honey is dissolved.
All a little too technical of me, ugh! the y use Honey and what is a ‘cup’ for goodness sake! But I am sure that a lot of my dear cuddly readers will enjoy it and if it makes you feel better when you are ill then that’s great.
Get well soon!
