Hotel hesperia sabinal

The hotel Hesperia Sabinal is (allegedly) a four star hotel which was plonked right on the Roquetas de Mar beach in Almeria (Spain) in a previous frenzy of hotel building. It’s not the best hotel in Spain or indeed the world (unless you read the nonsense written about it on websites who want to sell you a holiday there, and then again it isn’t the worst hotel in the world.

The kitchens look clean even if the “extensive” grounds are a sun lounger nightmare.

Kitchen hesperia sabina

So if you like the sort of holiday which allows you to be packed like a sardine on a sun lounger then this is definitely a place for you to consider!

Mind you I feel, as a Cat concerned for my dear cuddly readers welfare at all times, I should warn you about the menu which is being prepared in the extremely clean, but hot kitchens (looking at the young lady hiding behind the jars of pasta).

Muleteer someone who handles Mules

Now correct me if I am wrong but a Muleteer is someone who looks after and drives Mules, hmm I don’t know if I would like one of them even if it was covered in garlic.

Oh by the way the other Coliflor al Ajo Arriero the one not containing Muleteer is actually rather nice, it contains Sweet and Spicy Paprika and salt, with Cauliflower, garlic (potatoes are optional) and basically, as with most Spanish cooking you fry them all in oil, you can, if you feel adventurous add a splash of vinegar.

Some Spanish cooks serve Coliflor al Ajo Arriero with sliced boiled eggs – takes all sorts to make a world I say. Even though I adore Cauliflower Cheese I do believe that this dish is worth trying once in a while, it is one of the vast range of what we not in Spain, rather pompously in my opinion, call “Tapas” and the Spanish just call food.

Here is a picture of the dish sans Boiled Egg.

Coliflor al ajoarriero

Just to demonstrate how nice I am here is a recipe for Coliflor al Ajo Arriero.

(JOKE SPOLIER ALERT & RECIPE)

I have to say that the reason the dish has the odd English translation is that the it was named after the muleteers who traded garlic around the inland mesetas or towns and villages in English.

Coliflor al Ajo Arriero

Makes 4-6 servings.

Preparation Time: 15 min.

Cooking Time: 30 min.

Ingredients:

1 large cauliflower

5 cloves of garlic

3 tbsp roughly chopped parsley

1 tsp rock salt or sea salt

3 tbsp olive oil and a little extra for frying

About 2 tsp pimentón, sweet or bittersweet (to taste)

Splash of wine vinegar

Preparation:

Wash and break the cauliflower into small florets and simmer in salted boiling water until just tender. Meanwhile, pound four of the garlic cloves, the parsley, and salt in a mortar. Stir in the olive oil and three tablespoonfuls of the cauliflower’s cooking water.

Separately, sauté the final sliced clove of garlic in a little olive oil in a heavy-based frying pan. Turn the heat down to low, add the pimentón and a little wine vinegar, and stir in the mortar’s contents. Bring everything briefly to a boil.

Drain the cooked cauliflower well in a colander, transfer to a heated serving dish, and pour the contents of the frying pan over the top.

And if you are like ‘that’ serve with a boiled egg or two.

It has been sometime since we had any nonsense from our friends in the far east, who send us so many brand new, but broken, consumer goods that I am pretty sure we over here could do without, so it’s with great pleasure that I am able to offer yet another insight into China’s culture and cuisines.

Fried Farmer Shanghai

Fried Farmer Shanghai yum yum. That one’s a favourite over there I bet!

On the subject of menus, there is one in the picture, why is it that Chinese restaurants the world over always have sticky labels glued over the original price?

Why print menus if you are going to keep changing the price in biro and then glue it to the menu? And the menu above has also gone for a name change on the Fried Farmer I notice, what was the dish originally called, did they run out of farmers or did they complain?

It’s sad but true, journalism is not an exact science. If it was then most politicians, to say nothing of royal families, would be out of a job within hours! But journalism is full of ‘trade offs’ which keeps politicians and royal families firmly in their jobs, and it doesn’t stop there.

Journalism is as full of typos as any Chinese translation, and that is a fat – oops I meant fact!

Here is one of my favourite typos and I would like to sincerely thank all of the hard working dyslexic journalists at the New York Times (no less) for it, and then for a lot of wise cracking Twitter users who have adopted the fictional country in question.

Oh wait I think I should explain this perfect example of journalistic brain fade in more detail.

On Wednesday, January 7, a New York Times article about a rock climber who had been kidnapped in a Central Asian country carried this unfortunate typo, instead of Kyrgyzstan, the country was identified as the non-existent Kyrzbekistan.

Kyrzbekistan

Then inspired by the article and the entire nonsense of the moment hundreds, well a dozen or so, of Twitter users decided to become citizens of this non-existent country and inform others about their country’s customs, its exports and so much more and so they set up an “official” account for the country, @kyrzbekistan.

So what is Kyrzbekistan like? Here’s a sampling of what social media has been revealing about this intriguing new nation.

Kyzbekistan

Kipchak’s, for those who don’t know are a medieval Turkic people who conquered large parts of the Eurasian steppe during the Turkic expansion of the 11th and 12th centuries, so you can imagine what a threat they pose to a peace loving country such as Kyrzbekistan can’t you!

Bank of Kyrzbekistan

Wow what a credit rating – just as good as Russia’s and very soon to be so much better of course! But then Kyrzbekistan is obviously a place of great tranquility and fiscal responsibility.

Yak

Yak curry tee hee – I tend to think that the Yak ‘knows’ what this correspondent is talking about, so no wonder he has a long face, though like horses Yaks are blessed or cursed with rather long faces anyway.

There is even a flag!

Kyrzbekistan Flag

And for those who know anything about cities in the area surrounding this mythical country they might just recognise the names of the three largest cities in Kyrzbekistan.

1. Bishkent (capital)

2. Tashkek

3. Osh

Geddit!

I have it on good authority from a source in the know in the Kremlin, (who doesn’t want to be named, because not only is he a coward but he fancies a long life) that Pres. Putin, “is preparing plans to defend rights of the Russian speaking minority in the repressive country of Kyrzbekistan” just as tripartite talks between the President for life Atatürd the Third, the European Union and NATO are almost concluded and Kyrzbekistan will take its rightful place as a member of the European Community while it’s armed forces and famous Bicycle Brigade will become an integral part of NATO’s front and back line of defences.

Please don’t get the wrong impression of Kyrzbekistan by looking at our neighbours, may they forever rot in dark as the brilliance of our beloved Motherland bedazzles them, Kyrzbekistan is a country where there’s a lot of fun to be had, here’s a picture of our youngest competitor in last Friday’s forced laughing competition.

There s a lot of fun to be had

Happily I can tell you dear cuddle readers that Sarah the Camel’s family were saved from the dinner table when she won the competition despite intense completion from 53 year old Grandmother and ex forced laughing champion Nargiza.

Of course the fun doesn’t begin or end with forced laugher, quite the contrary, Saturday will see the return to KBC (the Kyrzbekistan Broadcasting Company) of the ever popular game show ‘Through the Window’ where contestants from our glorious second city of Tashkek will compete against the reigning champion Olga Bezprichiny for a place in the final to be held in Bishkent in two weeks time if the winner can have their head removed from the winning window in time!

Along the side of many surbaban roads in Tashkent are Маклюра Trees, roughly translated the name is Maclura Tree.

Because the locals didn’t know much about this tree that literally litters their highways I consulted the ever dreadful wikipedia and according to them (although they may be wrong, they often are), the Macular pomifera to give it its full name is quite a tree!

The locals said that the fruit could be used to repel rats and cockroaches, animals that are all too plentiful in Tashkent (and so it crossed my mind that they might be wrong there).

But ‘good old’ wikipedia has other ideas and all sorts of suggestions about what Maclura pomifera (don’t you wish it had a shorter name?) can be used for and indeed is called to say nothing of where e’they’ think it comes from!

Apparently the tree has lots of English common names, which of course the Uzbeks wouldn’t know about but I thought that you, my dear sweet and awfully cuddly readers would like to know. And so here they are!

Osage orange, hedge apple, horse apple, monkey ball, bois d’arc, bodark, or bodock, odd that in the west we refer to this plant as having fruit that is like apple or orange because as far as I know the fruit is poisonous, although rats and cockroachs have yet to be informed of that as they resolutely refuse to die when eating it.

So here is the rather odd tree in its winter glory, I was lucky enough to find one which hadn’t entirely shed its fruit.

Uzbek fruit

According to the ‘ever reliable’ wikipedia this unusual tree also grows in the states, isn’t it nice that a tree that grows in Europe it grows mainly in the exSoviet countries (apart from Italy apparently), maybe that is why wikipedia forgot to mention that the tree grows there?

The Maclura Tree was used, by what I used to call Red Indians, to make bows to shoot at their devoted enemies Cowboys and the 7th Calvary. It’s odd isn’t it that now we have to refer Red Indians as ‘Native Americans.’ I wonder why Red Indians would like to have anything to do with ‘Americans’ the people who stole their land don’t you?

Would you believe that most of the 220 million trees that stretched for 18,600 miles along or around (I’m not sure) the Great Plains states to help modify the weather and stop soil erosion, it’s odd that this happened between 1934 and 1942 and yet wikipedia doesn’t say whether it was a success!

But then you have to remember that as far as wikipedia is concerned this tree only grows in the states, which goes to show just how clever these wikipedian fools are and how daft we are to believe a word written in this dodgy online encyclopaedia which always seems to be asking for money but doesn’t want to earn any!

Oh and if you don’t believe me just look at the map of the natural range of the Macular pomifera as published in this unreliable web resource.

Maclura pomifera range map

Here is the same area with state names on. Odd that this strange fruit must be grown in a Texan city called Tashkent – well you learn something everyday. Well two things actually where Tashkent really is and DON’T TRUST WIKIPEDIA.

Colour Map 2

Oh I forgot to mention that all trees, most metal lamp posts and anything else that sticks out of the ground in Tashkent has white band painted around the bottom from ground level up to a metre or so. This white paint is some sort of repellant to deter creepy crawlies from using the trees as a home, odd that they paint a tree that they think repels cockroaches isn’t it?
